Through a Window
Break in through an open window. First floor windows will be easiest and safest, but these are also the most likely to be locked. Youll have better chances of finding a second floor window left open, but exercise caution – you don’t want to fall! If a ladder isnt available, you may have to get creative to reach a second storey window. Is there a fire escape you could climb? A trellis? A tree? Whatever you use, make sure its stable before climbing. Casement windows (side-hinged windows) may be easy to pry open with your fingers or a thin tool if they aren’t locked.

Remove the Door Knob
As long as the dead bolt on the door is not in use, you should be able to gain entry by removing the door knob. Most door knobs have the connection or mounting screws concealed, but look closely at the door knob and you will see a tiny pin-sized hole or slot, usually located below or to the side of the door knob. Using a thin piece of metal, like a straightened bobby pin or a paper clip, insert your newly made tool into the hole and apply pressure. You should feel resistance- keep pushing the metal tool as far into the hole as possible with one hand, while pulling and twisting the door knob with your other hand. Keep up this dance of applying pressure with your make-shift tool and simultaneously pulling and twisting the door knob until youve removed the door knob. Now all you have to do is pry off the decorative plate to reveal the lockset. Using a screwdriver (or your bobby pin) pull back on the locking mechanism and the door should unlock.

Call your Landlord
If you’re locked out during normal business hours, just call your landlord. If they don’t live onsite but they’re nice, they might be able to swing by and let you in. If they’re not in the building when you call and can’t let you in themselves, they’ll be able to refer you to a locksmith. If your problem happens outside of normal business hours, though, (like it’s 3 am and you’re getting home from a bar) don’t call them, especially if you have your landlord’s cell phone number. Your dumbassery is not their emergency. You may want to try to find alternate lodging for the time being and try calling when they’re available to let you in.
